How Chevrolet Is Bringing AI to the Drive With Google Gemini

Artificial intelligence is becoming part of the everyday driving experience, and Chevrolet is bringing Google Gemini to select vehicles equipped with Google built-in compatibility. Designed as an upgrade to the traditional Google Assistant experience, Gemini helps make navigation, communication, vehicle controls, and entertainment feel more conversational through voice interaction.

At Bob Fisher Chevrolet, we believe technology should support the drive without creating more distractions. Available Google Gemini is designed to help Chevrolet owners ask questions naturally, refine a request, and access compatible features while keeping their attention on the road.

What Is Google Gemini in a Chevrolet?

Google Gemini is an AI assistant available in select Chevrolet vehicles with Google built-in compatibility. Unlike older voice assistants that may require a specific command, Gemini is designed to understand context, respond to more complex questions, and help with follow-up requests.

For example, instead of simply asking for a restaurant, a driver may ask Gemini to find a breakfast stop along the route, then follow up by asking about menu pricing or hours. This more conversational format can make it easier to narrow down a destination without restarting the request.

Gemini is an opt-in feature. Eligible Chevrolet owners can choose to switch from Google Assistant to Gemini and can return to Google Assistant later through the vehicle Settings menu.

How Google Gemini Can Help on the Road

In a compatible Chevrolet, Gemini can help drivers complete a variety of everyday tasks through voice interaction. Feature operation may vary based on vehicle equipment, software version, internet connection, Google Account setup, connected-services status, app availability, and other conditions.

Google Gemini may help with:

  • Navigation: Find restaurants, stores, golf courses, attractions, charging locations, and other destinations based on detailed requests.
  • Communication: Share an estimated arrival time, help draft a message, edit a message, or translate a message into another language.
  • Vehicle controls: Adjust compatible climate settings and respond to requests such as “My windshield is foggy” or “My passenger is cold.”
  • Media: Find music, play a song, select entertainment based on a mood, or answer general questions about artists and content.
  • General information: Answer questions, help brainstorm ideas, and provide conversational assistance while traveling.

These features are designed to reduce the need for on-screen interaction. They do not replace safe driving practices. Drivers must remain attentive to traffic, road conditions, and the safe operation of the vehicle at all times.

A More Natural Voice Experience

Google Gemini works through Google built-in, which integrates compatible Google apps and services into an eligible Chevrolet infotainment system. When drivers are signed in to a Google Account, compatible features can help connect navigation, media, voice assistance, and other services through the vehicle display.

Gemini is designed to remember the context of a conversation. That can be useful when a driver needs to make a detailed request or ask related questions. Rather than starting over after each response, a driver may be able to add more information and continue the interaction.

For an even more conversational experience, eligible Chevrolet vehicles may offer Gemini Live. This feature allows for back-and-forth dialogue without requiring “Hey Google” before every sentence. Drivers can start Gemini Live by saying, “Hey Google, let’s talk,” or by pressing the steering-wheel voice-control button and saying, “Let’s talk.”

For example, a driver planning a trip could ask about family-friendly activities in a destination, ask about nearby trails or rentals, and then request hotel recommendations during the same conversation.

What Is Needed to Use Gemini?

Google Gemini is available only in select Chevrolet vehicles equipped with Google built-in compatibility. To enable Gemini, Chevrolet states that drivers need an active OnStar plan, Android 11 or later, English set as the assistant language, the latest version of Google Maps, the latest Google Assistant update, and a signed-in Google Account.

For eligible 2024 model year and older vehicles, a paid OnStar plan or trial is required to use Gemini. For eligible 2025 model year and newer Chevrolet vehicles, voice assistance with Gemini is included with standard OnStar Basics, which comes with the vehicle purchase.

Availability can vary by model, model year, trim, installed equipment, software, connectivity, and service-plan status. If Gemini is not yet available in an eligible vehicle after an update, Chevrolet notes that it may be coming soon.
